UFC on ESPN 8 Post-Fight Analysis
Lets get this post-fight writeup started with the whole debacle I had when placing bets - if you read my preview, you clearly saw I picked Baeza to beat Brown, as he did. But I guess I misclicked when placing bets and ended up betting on Brown. Should not let that get bother me too much though considering it was another great event.
Rest was all Overeem, for Harris never really recovered from the energy he expended in the first. When Overeem got Harris on the mat in the 2nd, it was all over. Harris did not have anything in the tank to even try to explode back up.
In the co-main, Gadelha and Hill fought to an extremely close decision. First round was clearly Gadelha, Hill then cracked her hard in the 2nd to win that round, and third round was dead even. I would not mind scoring more fights in a draw, but if you wanna find a winner for this, might as well flip a coin. Two judges saw it for Gadelha, so be it.
Dan Ige won something of a controversial decision against Edson Barboza. I guess I need to watch it again, but Barboza definitely landed the more damage throughout the fight, but somehow two judges saw two rounds for Ige. Barboza is one of the unluckiest fighters around, but at least he looked reasonably good at featherweight. Throw him at another top featherweight, he is still a force to be reckoned with. As for Ige, I don't think he actually won but he showed he can hang in there with some of the best in the world.
Eryk Anders put on another incoherent performance that had the makings of a fight that he could have won, but he perplexingly kept going for shitty shots instead of letting his power punches go. Whenever he did connect you could clearly tell that Jotko was bothered, but he never put on enough offence to put him down for the count. Surely he did not think cuddling would get him a decision win? Some fight IQ would be great to go with physicality, but guess some things are too much to ask.
Marlon Vera and Song Yadong fought very high-level, tight fight. Unfortunately for me, the biggest pick of the night did not workout, but Vera put on a good account of himself and he definitely won at least the third round. The second was close - I called it volume and pressure vs. more solid connections on Twitter. Judges preferred solid connections, and thus Song got the nod. Great win for the prospect.
Irwin Rivera turned out to be a poor pick from me, I did not realize the guy is so tiny. This is the downside of not doing proper research, you end up with brain fart picks like this. To be fair, he did bring it and caught Chikadze with some hard shots, but was never getting anywhere close to a decision victory as he absorbed punishment from range.
Courtney Casey made easy work of Mara Romello Borella, submitting her with an armbar that seemed very painful. Darren Elkins and Nate Landwehr put together whole total of 10 brain cells, killing 9 of them in slugfest where defence was nonexistent. Landwehr never moved his head at all, as if head movement was illegal, and at times did not even bother to keep his hands up. That kind of style just has very quick expiry date in the UFC, but he did land a lot of good power and had Elkins a mask of blood by the end. I still think Elkins landed a lot of shots in two of the rounds so he would have gotten my scorecard, but either way judges unanimously had it for Landwehr and unlike some other decisions on the card, you cannot really complain it when the opponent is so badly bloodied up.
The night opened up with the easiest pick on the evening, as the guy who got submitted last time around by kickboxer got this time submitted by an actual grappler. Perplexing how the odds had Mayes as the favorite, but the guy just does not seem UFC level. Interesting to see where Nascimento goes from here, I did find the Sherman callout a bit strange considering how good Sherman has looked - why go looking for the tough prospects to fight when you probably run into each other later during the ascent to the top?
Second worst was main event pick of Harris, but at least that was very close to cash. Best bet was probably Nascimento, the first fight of the night, considering it was my 3rd biggest bet and an underdog, as well as it being very straightforward pick. I wonder how people pulled the odds. I guess generally the public overrates power guys, in a way Harris was an example of that as well, being favorite against Overeem.
Definitely much worse event for me than the prior two, but it was still a winning stretch of 3 events for me that had 19 picks out of 32 go right. Now there is another week off before we get back and hopefully my computer will be back in working order then so that I can get back to doing proper previews, none of this amateur BS.
Main Card
Walt Harris cracked Overeem's chin and some refs would have stepped in faster when he was barraging Overeem. No complaints in that regard though cause Overeem showed that he was still in it, craftily sweeping Harris to get back up and then taking him down as the over-excited Harris went for a sloppy kick.Rest was all Overeem, for Harris never really recovered from the energy he expended in the first. Prelims
Kevin Holland came out of the blocks fast and starched Anthony Hernandez. In the mentioned fight where I had the bet mistake, I would have been happy to find out that I was mistaken if Brown actually finished Baeza in the 1st, which was not that far from happening. Baeza survived through getting hurt, and then the durability of a 27-year-old showed through against the man 12 years his elder. Brown was quickly put away in the second.Irwin Rivera turned out to be a poor pick from me, I did not realize the guy is so tiny. My picks
Well I obviously ended up at quite significant loss of about 3 bets, after getting 5 out of 11 bets right. As already addressed, I actually got 6 out of 11 picks right in the preview but hey, the actual score is tracked via bets, so the key lesson is to be more careful next time, that nets me one extra loss and more painfully losing actual money. Worst bet of the night was definitely Rivera, cause it would have been avoided (or at least reduced into a smaller bet) with very little research.Second worst was main event pick of Harris, but at least that was very close to cash. Best bet was probably Nascimento, the first fight of the night, considering it was my 3rd biggest bet and an underdog, as well as it being very straightforward pick.
