UFC of ESPN 10 Preview & Predictions

Alright, welcome to another edition of poorly-researched, yet somehow mostly right (so far) fight predictions. Let's see if this event will finally buck the trend of me getting away with just doing fast previews. Frankly I was hopeful that I could replace the broken SSD of my main computer already this week, but another week passes without it shipping. Thanks Covid-19.

Main Event: Jessica Eye vs. Cynthia Calvillo

I honestly have no impression whatsoever of Jessica Eye, despite her basically having fought who's who of women's MMA, and largely having done okay in the process. Calvillo on the other hand did leave an impression to one's mind with her early run. She should be pretty comfortably outsided here by Eye though, and I am not entirely sure if she can have the kind of approach that could outskill Eye by so much.

I am not at all sure though. It's a rare main event in the regard that I have no clear vision of how this will go. Calvillo is primarily a sub hunter with a competent standup, but Eye has not been subbed for years despite facing bigger and more dangerous grapplers. I think she comfortably decisions this by keeping it on the feet.

Co-Main Event: Karl Robertson vs. Marvin Vettori

I have been a bit Vettori mark for the longest time and I still maintain he is one of the brightest prospects of the middleweight division, I even picked him against Adesanya (bad choice in hindsight, but shows how high I rate him). Robertson has fought some high level competition too, but so far has not left a strong impression on me.

From my research so far Vettori is the better rounded fighter here. Robertson probably has the power, but I would not peg the chance of a KO as very high considering Vettori has showed great chin so far, having never been KOd. Vettori should also be the better grappler of the two. That's why I expect him to control Robertson in clinch and takedowns to a decision.

Charles Rosa vs. Kevin Aguilar
Charles Rosa got twisted into a pretzel by Bryce Mitchell for 3 rounds, which can't do great things to your confidence, but at the same time he has a chance to get back on right track here. Aguilar is not bad but lacks good wins, and has been KOd couple of times. Particularly being KOd by Tukhugov is not that great look.

That said Rosa is not exactly KO artist but a guy known for his grappling. Either way I lean towards Rosa having this.

Andre Fili vs. Charles Jourdain
Jourdain shocked everyone in his last fight by comfortably KOing Korean Superboy. Fili on the other hand got overpowered by Yusuff which was not really a great shock. It was good for Fili to survive until the bell in that fight, but he is sometimes hittable and has a dodgy chin.

So Jourdain definitely can win the fight, but I just feel like Fili is a really big step-up in competition. Yeah, Doo Ho Choi was a star already but in hindsight we can see his game had big holes that were covered by the fact he hits deceptively hard. Fili on the other hand has been battle tested much more.

Jordan Espinosa vs. Mark De La Rosa
I will look stupid if this pick goes wrong, but I don't think De La Rosa is just good enough at this level. Espinosa at least is fast and rangy for the division, so he should be able to fight his fight and coast to victory.

Mariya Agapova vs. Hannah Cifers
Lot of really quick turnarounds in recent fights. Guess having less fighters available forces them to give chances to more people. Cifers fights with two weeks between the fights only and faces a solid but green prospect in Agapova. Cifers was dominating Dern on the feet so I expect her to pick up right where she left off and Agapova is not as good to catch her like that in a submission.

Merab Dvalishvili vs. Gustavo Lopez
Lopez has balls to step up on the short notice against the guy with perhaps biggest gastank in the UFC. If this one makes it past 3 minutes, it will be very one-sided, Dvalishvili drowns people in pace. Lopez has only chance to KO Merab but I highly doubt that will happen, maybe 1 in 10 chance at most, if even that.

Dvalishvili via 2nd round TKO.

Julia Avila vs. Gina Mazany
Outside of freak injuries, Avila is unbeaten in MMA. Mazany on the other hand has lost against anyone of note that she has fought. She beat some 44-year-old lady in the regional scene to get ticket back to UFC, but does not actually mean she is good enough to be at this level.

Avila via 2nd round submission.

Tyson Nam vs. Zarrukh Adashev
Basically experienced, high-level regional fighter in Nam fighting against talented but green regional fighter in Adashev. Nam should be good enough to beat Adashev who might have great talent but is only 4 fights deep into his career. Best guy Adashev beat has 3-2 record. For Nam this will be 31st pro fight and although he has only losses in UFC, he was competitive against both Kara France and Pettis.

Christian Aguilera vs. Anthony Ivy
Two regionals I have no clue of, so this is the no expertise whatsoever portion of the previews. However, just looking at their records, Aguilera gets KOd way too much. I think they will scrap wildly and Ivy who has never been KOd will be the one whose chin holds up. I don't know, its just a guess based on nothing but we will see. With 5 KOs under his belt, Ivy obviously packs some serious power as well.

Anthony Ivy via 1st round KO.1
